Whether a bull in a china shop or an angler on a mirror-like flat, there’s simply one thing to remember, don’t move much. Any unfamiliar noise or vibration can be the beginning of the end. If the fish aren’t in range and you have to get closer, do anything but crank up the horses. A trolling motor will work most of the time, and a pole, if you have one, will do the job, but possibly the best strategy for catching fish is to shut down and let the tide or wind carry you into position.
For picky stripers and blues, drifting is exactly how Lou Tabory and Terry Gibson caught their fish. As for Jeff Weakley and Larry Kinder, who fished for reds, they opted for the oldest form of propulsion, the paddle.
