When you think of fly fishing do you automatically think of surface fishing? A lot of anglers do, but it doesn't stop there. Today, inshore saltwater fly fishers are fishing flies throughout the water column, so, we no longer have to rack the fly rod and pick up a spin outfit rigged with sinking lures to catch fish down deep.
And this versatility comes in handy on the flats, in rivers, bays and creeks, and even in the surf. The applications are many-stripers deep in a rip, snook sulking in mid-depths under a bridge, tarpon cruising three feet under the surface, and how about that big seatrout parked in a deep pothole?
Flying low is Terry Gibson and Lou Tabory for blues and stripers in Cape Cod and Mike Conner is tracking down fast-moving Pompano in Florida.
