Stripers

When a fish has no less than three common names, it must be popular. In the northeast it’s a “striper” or a “bass,” in the mid-Atlantic it’s a rockfish. More effort and more money are spent toward catching striped bass in salt water than any other marine or estuarine species.
Striped bass are great gamefish and fine eating. But there’s a larger mystique surrounding them. Their unique life histories, their marathon migrations, and of course, their awesome comeback story inspire an un-paralleled passion among anglers, scientists and conservationists.
Join Editor Terry Gibson and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on Tangier Island, as they get a class of high school biology students from the mountains of Maryland hooked on striper fishing.
When schooled up, stripers behave like bluefish and jacks. But they also behave like snook or redfish when they’re foraging on flats or set up in an ambush station behind structure. Yep, you can use “striper tactics” for warm-water fish.
