| from Shallow Water Angler |
Fade to Black
Episode 8
Whether you’re fishing the dark of night or just plain dark water, the successful anglers stand out in a crowd. In dark water situations, which most shallow water situations consist of, it’s key to learn what works best. Join Blair Wickstrom as he heads to the tannic-stained backwater of the Everglades with Adam Gelber and Brian Currie. Since fish can’t really distinguish colors the way we can, the key is to get your bait to stand out.
Dark water, dark bait. But then again, some say when the water is super clear; a bright flashy bait might spook a fish in less than two-feet of water. In one case the dark bait in dark water stands out better. In the second case the darker bait is less obtrusive or threatening and works better.
Finding dark lures isn’t a problem, soft grubs, jigs, hard-bodied lures and spoons are available. And what if you’re favorite lure doesn’t come in a dark color, or you’re out on your boat and you just lost your last dark lure, break out a Sharpie or plan ahead with some spray paint.
