Pops on the Rocks
Episode 9
A jetty sticks out into the ocean like a big hand. And that big hand blocks schools of baitfish that would otherwise move down the coast, making them easy marks from predatory fish. For that reason, jetty fishing can be explosive.
Join Editor Mike Conner as he works the rocky jetties, fish havens that provide hidey-holes where baitfish and crustaceans can hide, and current breaks where game fish can rest and ambush passing prey. And then we’ll head south to fish with Editors Jeff Weakley and Frank Bolin in the the warmer Atlantic.
Surface action can be hot right against the jetty rocks, so topwater or sub-surface lures and flies can be go-to lures. Snook, stripers, tarpon, blues mackerel and trout are commonly caught on top.
Sans surface busts, it pays to plumb the water column with jigs or natural baits for fish smack on the bottom.
Go and pick a jetty, the hand you’ll get, we’ll have much better odds of winning than a hand of Texas Hold’em.
